Biodiversity Methodologies

Nature-based solutions for quantifying biodiversity conservation

BioCarbon develops and approves methodological documents that establish the technical requirements for quantifying biodiversity conservation outcomes under the BioCarbon Biodiversity Standard (BBS).

Each methodology defines the indicators, baseline requirements, and monitoring protocols used by accredited Conformity Assessment Bodies (CABs) to audit conservation outcomes, supporting BioCarbon's conformity determination for the issuance of BioCredits.

All methodological documents are subject to public consultation prior to approval and remain publicly available, together with their version history, to ensure transparency and traceability.

Methodological Document for Ecosystem and Biodiversity Conservation Activities

Status: In force

This methodology applies to initiatives implementing preservation, ecological restoration, and/or sustainable use activities in terrestrial ecosystems, mangroves, or wetlands, worldwide.

Initiatives may also incorporate Landscape Management Tools (LMTs) — such as biological corridors, riparian buffers, live fences, enclosures for natural regeneration, agroforestry and silvopastoral systems, or hydrological restoration in wetlands — as complementary measures to strengthen ecological connectivity and the long-term sustainability of conservation outcomes.
