Assessment of the program and its methodologies
Sylvera has assessed the GHG Crediting Program BioCarbon Standard. It also conducts Methodology Profiles, which examine the design of individual methodologies and their application of common program requirements and tools.
Methodology assessments
Sylvera’s published case study presents its assessments of BCR0001, covering afforestation, reforestation and revegetation, and BCR0010, covering improved forest management and avoided planned forest conversion. Assessments of other BioCarbon Standard methodologies are ongoing.
What methodology assessments cover
Carbon accounting
Approaches to quantifying emission reductions and removals, including baseline setting, relevant carbon pools and leakage.
Additionality
Requirements for demonstrating that project activities go beyond the baseline scenario, including regulatory surplus and common practice assessments.
Permanence
Provisions for assessing risks to the durability of carbon outcomes and addressing potential reversals.
Safeguards and sustainable development
Requirements addressing environmental and social risks, stakeholder rights and contributions to sustainable development.
Independent assessment and continuous improvement
BioCarbon Cert uses independent assessments to identify review priorities and strengthen its methodologies and tools. Findings concerning shared program tools can also inform improvements across the methodology portfolio.
Scope of the assessments
Program assessments and Methodology Profiles have specific scopes. Ratings of individual projects and carbon credits are separate assessments.
