Since 2025, BioCarbon Standard has undergone an independent program-level screening by Calyx Global, an independent carbon credit ratings and assessment provider.
Calyx Global’s program screening framework evaluates the robustness of carbon crediting programs against 31 criteria, covering six core areas: governance, registry operations, transparency, validation and verification, rules and procedures, and stakeholder engagement.
The screening of BioCarbon Standard included a detailed review of the BCR Standard and key program documents governing double counting, corporate governance, ethics and compliance, fees, methodology development and approval, organizational structure, standard operating procedures, and validation and verification.
Calyx reviewed BioCarbon Standard’s institutional and governance arrangements, including the public disclosure of its management and governing bodies, conflict-of-interest requirements, grievance and redress mechanisms, and the transparency of roles and responsibilities within the organization.
The screening confirmed the existence of publicly available governance structures and enforceable conflict-of-interest provisions applicable across the organization.
The assessment examined whether BioCarbon’s regulatory documents, methodologies, and related tools are publicly accessible and whether methodologies are developed and updated through formally established procedures.
Calyx confirmed both the public availability of the program’s regulatory framework and the existence of formal procedures governing methodology development, review, and revision.
The screening reviewed BioCarbon’s requirements for public consultation in both methodology development and individual projects, as well as requirements for documenting and disclosing stakeholder feedback and responses.
Calyx confirmed requirements for public stakeholder consultation and the publication of stakeholder responses and related project information.
Calyx assessed BioCarbon Standard’s requirements for independent third-party validation and verification.
The screening confirmed that credits under the BCR Standard are issued on an ex-post basis, following monitoring and independent verification, and that projects are subject to validation and verification by accredited third parties.
The assessment examined the systems used to issue, transfer, retire, and cancel Verified Carbon Credits.
Calyx confirmed that BioCarbon uses a registry system supporting uniquely identifiable credits and rules for issuance, transfer, retirement, cancellation, and public traceability.
The screening also confirmed public disclosure of retirement information, including the purpose of retirement and, where applicable, the entity on whose behalf credits were retired.
Calyx reviewed BioCarbon Standard’s mechanisms for preventing multiple claims over the same mitigation outcomes.
The assessment confirmed that BioCarbon has established requirements addressing double issuance, double use, and double claiming, supported by registry controls, documentary evidence, and participation checks.
Independent assessment is an important component of BioCarbon’s commitment to transparency and continuous improvement.
Calyx Global’s screening provides an external assessment of the institutional and operational systems supporting the BioCarbon Standard and identifies both areas of demonstrated alignment with its screening criteria and opportunities for further strengthening.
BioCarbon uses independent assessments such as this one to continuously review and strengthen its standards, procedures, governance arrangements, and market infrastructure.
